CELPIP Listening Part 3: Listening for Information
Can you catch and retain concrete details — names, numbers, places, steps — from an informative conversation?
How this part works
An information-dense exchange, typically one person explaining something to another — a service, a process, a place — played once, then questions on the details.
The one thing that scores 9+
Before the audio starts, glance at what kinds of details the questions want (a number? a day? a reason?) so your ear is primed. Then note CATEGORIES, not sentences: prices, times, locations, steps. The options will paraphrase the audio — "twice a month" becomes "every two weeks" — so store meanings, not sound. If you write exact words and match by sound, the paraphrase traps get you.
A worked example
Original — the audio is summarised so you can see the trap on paper. On the real test you'd hear it once, not read it.
What you'd hear: A community-centre employee explains the new fitness pass: it costs $40 a month for adults, half price for seniors, includes the pool on weekdays only, and sign-up must be done in person with photo ID.
What does the pass include on weekends?
- Pool access
- All gym facilities except the pool
- Nothing — it is weekday-only
- Classes but not the gym
Answer: All gym facilities except the pool
Why: The audio said the pool is included "on weekdays only". The question flips that restriction to the weekend — you're expected to infer what remains. Catching the detail is half the mark; being able to invert it is the other half.
What caps people at Level 7
- Trying to write full sentences and losing the next two details while writing.
- Matching options to the audio by identical wording instead of meaning.
- Ignoring restrictions ("only", "except", "unless") — they are exactly what gets tested.
