CELPIP vs IELTS: which should you take for Canada?

For IRCC the two are interchangeable — a CLB 9 is a CLB 9, whichever logo is on the report. We build free practice for both and sell neither, so this is the version without a sales pitch: where the score bars sit, how the experience differs, and which kind of test-taker each one favours.

Fast answer

CELPIP suits people at ease with everyday Canadian English — one computer sitting, recorded speaking, levels that map 1:1 to CLB. IELTS GT suits people trained on semi-formal writing who prefer a live examiner and a test they can sit almost anywhere in the world. The bar to respect: IELTS listening needs 8.0 for CLB 9, and CELPIP has no partial credit — the 8→9 jump is a real wall. Try both free before booking: CELPIP practice · IELTS practice.

IELTS to CELPIP conversion (via CLB)

There is no official direct IELTS↔CELPIP table. Both convert to CLB on IRCC's charts — CELPIP trivially, since levels are CLB levels:

CLBCELPIP levelIELTS ListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
10108.58.07.57.5
998.07.07.07.0
887.56.56.56.5
776.06.06.06.0

IELTS values are the minimum band for each CLB; IRCC equivalency charts on canada.ca, verified July 5, 2026. So the famous IELTS "8777" equals CELPIP 9 in all four skills. Check any mix in the CLB converter.

The experience differences that actually decide it

Speaking: recorded vs a live human

This is the biggest experiential difference between the two tests. CELPIP has you record 8 short tasks into a microphone against a visible timer; IELTS sits you across from a real examiner for a conversation. People who freeze talking to a screen should lean IELTS; people who ramble nervously under an examiner's gaze — or whose test-day anxiety is social — often score higher on CELPIP.

The IELTS listening trap

On IRCC's chart IELTS listening runs half a band hot: CLB 9 needs 8.0 when every other skill needs 7.0, and 7.5 is only CLB 8. CELPIP has no such asymmetry — level 9 is level 9 in every skill — but its listening is single-play: you hear everything exactly once.

The CELPIP 8→9 wall

IELTS moves in half-bands, so incremental progress shows. CELPIP has no partial credit between levels — an 8 is CLB 8, full stop, and the 8→9 jump is the classic plateau, usually broken by better-developed content rather than harder grammar.

Challenging your result

If you believe a score is wrong: IELTS offers an examiner remark (Enquiry on Results), while CELPIP re-evaluates per component with a refund if the score changes. The policies differ enough to matter — full comparison in the remark/rescore guide.

Traps to respect before booking

  • Book the right version: IRCC needs IELTS General Training (not Academic) and CELPIP-General (not LS) — the twin-version mistake costs a full test fee.
  • IELTS listening needs 8.0 for CLB 9 — plan training time accordingly.
  • CELPIP is single-play listening — no second chance at any audio.
  • Lowest skill rules: IRCC never averages — compare the tests at your weakest skill, not your average.

CELPIP vs IELTS FAQ

Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?

Neither is easier across the board — IRCC sets the same CLB bar on both. CELPIP feels easier to people comfortable with everyday Canadian English and recorded speaking; IELTS General Training feels easier to people trained on semi-formal letters and essays who prefer a live human interview. The honest comparison is skill by skill, against your own weakest skill.

What is IELTS 8777 equivalent to in CELPIP?

IELTS 8777 (Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0) is CLB 9 in all four skills. CELPIP levels map 1:1 to CLB, so the CELPIP equivalent is level 9 in all four skills.

Do CELPIP and IELTS scores convert to each other?

Only through CLB levels. There is no official direct CELPIP-to-IELTS table; IRCC publishes an equivalency chart for each test to CLB, so you convert your score to CLB on one chart and read the requirement off the other.

Is CELPIP accepted outside Canada?

CELPIP is designed around Canadian immigration and is accepted by IRCC; acceptance for foreign universities or other countries’ visas is far narrower than IELTS, which is used worldwide. If you might need the result for anything beyond IRCC, check the specific institution before choosing CELPIP.
