How many CRS points is each CLB level worth?

Language is the single biggest lever in your Express Entry score — but the gaps aren't even. Getting to CLB 9 is worth a huge jump; grinding from CLB 9 to CLB 10 is worth surprisingly little. Here are the exact numbers, and the transferability twist that makes CLB 9 the real sweet spot.

The core language points, per CLB level

Each of your four abilities (listening, reading, writing, speaking) earns points based on its CLB level. The value per ability depends on whether you're applying with a spouse:

CLB (each ability)Single — per abilitySingle — all 4With spouse — all 4
CLB 7176864
CLB 8239288
CLB 931124116
CLB 10+34136128

First-official-language points, from the official IRCC CRS grid (per ability: single 17/23/31/34, with spouse 16/22/29/32 at CLB 7/8/9/10). Verified July 2026.

The gaps that actually matter

  • CLB 7 → CLB 9: +56 points (single) or +52 (with spouse) — the biggest single-factor improvement available to most applicants.
  • CLB 8 → CLB 9: +32 points (single) or +28 — and, as below, usually much more once transferability kicks in.
  • CLB 9 → CLB 10: only +12 points (single or spouse) — the smallest step, and the hardest to earn.

Read that last line twice. The leap from CLB 9 to a near-perfect CLB 10 across all four skills — months of extra work — adds just 12 core points. For almost everyone, that effort is better spent elsewhere.

The twist: why CLB 9 (not 10) is the sweet spot

The table above is only the core language points. There's a second bucket —skill transferability — for combining language with your education and foreign work experience. The crucial detail: those bonuses require at least CLB 7 and reach their maximum at CLB 9. They do not increase at CLB 10.

So the real value of reaching CLB 9 is bigger than the core +32 from CLB 8 — because hitting CLB 9 canalso unlock the top tier of transferability points (up to roughly another 50–100, depending on your education and work history). And the value of CLB 10 is only the core +12, because transferability already maxed out at 9. That asymmetry is why CLB 9 is the target and CLB 10 rarely worth chasing. (The exact transferability combinations are on IRCC's criteria page.)

Same CLB = same points, whichever test

These points are awarded on your CLB, not your test — a CLB 9 from CELPIP, IELTS or PTE Core is worth exactly the same. So choose the test your weakest skill clears most easily; seethe easiest test to reach CLB 9. And if you have any French, a second language (NCLC 7) adds up to 50 more CRS points — often the easiest points on the board.
