Did you book the right test version?

Every test IRCC accepts has a near-identical twin that IRCC does not accept for Express Entry. Booking the wrong one costs the full test fee and months of waiting — and it is one of the most common mistakes in every immigration forum. Sixty seconds here can save you both.

The rule, per test (IRCC's own wording, canada.ca)

For Express Entry / economic PR, book…NOT…
IELTS General TrainingIELTS Academic
PTE CorePTE Academic
CELPIP-GeneralCELPIP General LS
TEF CanadaTEF / e-TEF / TEFAQ (Québec)
TCF CanadaTCF / TCF ANF / TCF Québec

IRCC's Express Entry page states each of these by name: "You must take the IELTS General Training option", "You must take the PTE Core option", "You must take the CELPIP-General test", and lists TEF Canada / TCF Canada specifically. Verified July 5, 2026.

The traps, one by one

IELTS: Academic ≠ General Training

Academic is for university admission and licensing; General Training is what Express Entry needs. Same listening and speaking, different reading and writing — and different raw-score-to-band tables. If you already sat Academic for study plans, it does not carry over to your PR profile. Also note: IRCC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entrydetails here.

PTE: Core ≠ Academic

Pearson runs two separate tests. PTE Core (everyday English) is the one IRCC accepts for economic immigration; PTE Academic is for study. The task types overlap but are not identical — Core has Write Email and Respond to a Situation; Academic has essays and academic summaries.Practise the Core task types free.

CELPIP: General ≠ General LS

CELPIP General tests all four skills and works for Express Entry. CELPIP General LS tests only listening and speaking — it is accepted forcitizenship, not for economic PR programs. If PR is the goal, LS is the wrong booking no matter how attractive the shorter test looks.

TEF / TCF: only the "Canada" versions

France Éducation International and CCI Paris run several variants of each French test. For IRCC, only TEF Canada and TCF Canada count — the regular TEF/TCF, theANF (nationalité française) versions and the Québec-specific versions (TEFAQ/TCF Québec) are different products for different authorities. Check the exact name on your booking confirmation.

And two tests that are never accepted for PR

TOEFL and the Duolingo English Test are not IRCC-designated for any economic immigration program, no matter what a college accepted them for. A university can take DET for admission while IRCC still requires one of the five tests above for your PR application — plan one testing strategy for the whole journey, not just the first step.
