PTE Core Fill in the Blanks: method, scoring and practice
A transcript appears with gaps while the recording plays once, and you type the missing words. Reading ahead, tracking position and spelling from context matter as much as hearing the sound itself.
How Fill in the Blanks is scored
This integrated task contributes to Listening and Writing, with partial credit for each correctly spelled missing word. Correct meaning with incorrect spelling does not reproduce the recorded word accurately.
Use this correctly: practise the task rule and review the exact error pattern. A task-level practice result is not a conversion to Pearson’s 10–90 score and is not a promise of your test result.
A three-step method that survives test pressure
- Step 1. Use the preview to predict each blank’s grammar and likely topic before audio begins.
- Step 2. Follow the transcript with your eyes and type a quick phonetic approximation if spelling would make you lose your place.
- Step 3. After audio, use grammar, collocation and the surrounding sentence to correct every blank’s spelling and form.
Three common traps
- Looking down at the keyboard and losing your position in the transcript.
- Leaving a rough phonetic spelling unchanged after the recording.
- Changing a word that you heard clearly because another synonym seems more natural.

Approach: Predict plural nouns from the numbers, type the sounds while listening, then confirm the plural endings and spelling from sentence meaning.
