How does Duolingo English Test adaptive scoring work?
The DET changes question difficulty as you respond. Its 10–160 score accounts for both response performance and item difficulty, so receiving harder or easier questions is part of measurement—not a reward or penalty by itself.
The Duolingo English Test is computer adaptive: the next items are selected using the test’s current estimate of your English ability. Stronger performance generally leads to more difficult items; weaker performance leads to more accessible ones. Different candidates can therefore see different question sequences and still receive comparable scores.
Duolingo explains that the score uses Item Response Theory (IRT). That means the calculation considers both how you responded and how informative or difficult the calibrated item was; it is not a simple percentage-correct test. One difficult item does not decide the result, and the changing difficulty is not evidence that you have already secured or lost a particular score.
For practice, focus on the response rules, short timers and language skill behind each task. A fixed third-party worksheet can reproduce task mechanics, but it cannot reproduce Duolingo’s calibrated item bank or generate an official adaptive score.
