City Transit Update: Fall Schedule Changes
Starting September 8, Riverside Transit will introduce several changes to bus and light rail service across the city. The transit authority says the update is meant to address rider complaints about overcrowding on popular routes and long waits during evening hours.
The most noticeable change affects Route 12, which runs between the downtown core and the Maple Heights neighbourhood. Buses on this route will now come every eight minutes during weekday rush hours, down from the current twelve-minute wait. To make this possible, Riverside Transit is shifting two buses from Route 7, a route that connects the industrial park to the eastern suburbs. Route 7 ridership has dropped by nearly a third since many warehouse jobs moved online or closed last year, so planners felt the buses were better used elsewhere.
Light rail service will also see a change. The Blue Line, which currently stops running at 12:30 a.m., will extend its hours until 1:45 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays only. This comes after months of requests from restaurant and bar workers downtown who finish shifts after the last train has already left.
Riders should also note that fares will rise slightly. A single adult fare will go from $3.25 to $3.50, while the monthly pass increases from $95 to $99. Seniors, students, and children will not see any fare change this year.
Paper transfers are being phased out at the same time. Anyone still using cash will receive a printed slip valid for ninety minutes, but the transit authority is encouraging riders to switch to the tap card system, which will remain unaffected by the fare increase for the first three months.
Riverside Transit will hold two public information sessions, on August 20 and August 27, for residents who want to ask questions about the changes before they take effect.
