Municipal Election Guide: What Every Voter Should Know
With Coquitlam's municipal election set for October 17, the city has released a voter guide to help residents understand how local elections work and why they matter. Unlike federal or provincial elections, municipal elections determine who sits on city council and who serves as mayor — the people who decide on property taxes, garbage collection schedules, bus routes, and where new housing gets built.
To vote in a municipal election, you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old on voting day, and a resident of the municipality for at least six months immediately before election day. You do not need to be a property owner. Renters are just as eligible to vote as homeowners, a point the city guide stresses because turnout among renters has historically been lower.
Advance voting opens two weeks before election day at four locations across the city, including the Poirier Community Centre and Town Centre Library. On election day itself, polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at local schools and community halls. Voters should bring one piece of government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's licence or BC Services Card. Those without photo ID can instead present two other approved documents, one of which must show their current address, like a utility bill or bank statement.
Mail-in ballots are available for residents who cannot attend in person due to travel, illness, or disability. Requests for mail-in ballots must reach the city clerk's office no later than five days before election day, since ballots are mailed out and must be returned by Election Day to be counted.
Historically, municipal election turnout has lagged well behind federal elections, even though city council decisions often affect residents' daily lives more directly. The city hopes this year's guide, mailed to every household, will help reverse that trend.
