Fall Hockey League Signups Open at Riverbend Community Centre
The Riverbend Community Centre has announced that registration for its fall recreational hockey league is now open, with sign-ups accepted online or in person until September 5. League play begins the first week of October and runs for fourteen weeks, wrapping up just before the winter holiday break.
This season, the league is expanding to include four divisions instead of the usual three: Junior (ages 7-10), Intermediate (ages 11-14), Youth (ages 15-17), and Adult (18 and over). Organizers say the new Youth division was added after several teens who had aged out of Intermediate found the Adult games too fast-paced for their skill level. Each division will play one game per week, either on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, with teams assigned once registration closes.
Registration fees are $185 for Junior and Intermediate skaters, $210 for Youth, and $240 for Adult players, all of which include a team jersey and end-of-season awards night. Families registering more than one child receive a $25 discount per additional sibling. Anyone who registers before August 15 qualifies for an early-bird discount of 10 percent off the total fee.
New players do not need to own full equipment right away. The centre's Loan-a-Skate program, run in partnership with a local sporting goods store, lends helmets, pads, and skates free of charge for the first month while families arrange their own gear. Returning players are asked to bring proof of last season's registration to speed up check-in.
Parents and adult players should note that a criminal record check is required for anyone who wishes to coach or volunteer as a bench staff member this season, a new policy introduced after a review of youth programs across the region. Volunteers can begin the record-check process at the front desk.
Spaces are limited in the Junior division, and organizers expect it to fill first based on past seasons.
