Subject: Getting ready before we meet about taxes
Hi Priya,
Thanks for agreeing to look over my taxes again this year — I really appreciate it, especially since things are a bit more complicated now that I picked up freelance graphic design work on top of my regular job at the clinic. I want to make sure I bring everything so we're not scrambling halfway through our appointment like last April.
From my day job, I'll have the T4 slip once it arrives in early February. For the freelance side, I've been keeping a shoebox (literally) of receipts for my laptop repair, a portion of my internet bill, and the desk I bought in the fall. I read online that I can only claim a percentage of home expenses based on how much of my apartment is actually used for work, so I measured my little office nook — it's about 12% of the total floor space. Does that sound like enough documentation, or should I get an accountant to double-check the calculation?
I also switched banks in June, so I'll need to track down the T5 slip for the small amount of interest my old savings account earned before I closed it. And I finally opened a TFSA in March, though I only put in $1,500, so I'm guessing that won't affect much.
One more thing: my sister says I should file even though I made under the basic personal amount from my day job alone, because of some benefit called the GST credit. Is that worth pursuing, or is it not applicable given the freelance income?
Could we set up a time the week of March 9th? I'd rather not leave this until the last week before the deadline again — last year gave me a mild heart attack over a missing receipt.
Thanks so much,
Dana
