Reading passage
Hi Priya,
I still can't believe it's really happening — by the time you read this, the moving truck will already be halfway to Calgary! I wanted to write instead of just texting, because six years of living two blocks from each other deserves more than a quick message.
I keep thinking back to when you first moved into the building on Elm Street. You knocked on my door to ask if I had a spare cardboard box, and somehow we ended up talking on your balcony until midnight. I never expected that random introduction would turn into the friendship we have now.
I know you've been going back and forth about this move for months. The new job at the engineering firm is a huge step up, and Calgary will be good for you and Malik, especially with his parents nearby to help with the kids once the new baby arrives. I'm genuinely happy for you, even though I'll admit I got a little emotional packing up the mugs you left behind for me last weekend.
Don't worry about the book club — I'll keep sending you the picks every month, and you can just video call in whenever your schedule allows. Also, I already looked into flights, and apparently there's a fairly cheap direct route from Toronto to Calgary in October, so I'm tentatively planning to visit for Thanksgiving. Save me the pull-out couch.
One last thing: thank you for being the neighbour who watered my plants every time I travelled for work, and for never once complaining about my cat wandering onto your patio. Elm Street won't be the same without you upstairs.
Text me the second the truck arrives so I know you made it safely. I'll be waiting to hear all about the new place.
With love,
Sandra
