IELTS Writing Task 1 (Academic)

The diagram below shows the five stages through which a country's population passes as its economy develops, known as the demographic transition. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The stages of the demographic transition in a developing country
Stage 1
Stage 1: High stationary
Birth and death rates both high (about 40 per 1,000); population low and stable
Stage 2
Stage 2: Early expanding
Death rate falls sharply (to about 20 per 1,000) as healthcare improves; births stay high; population grows rapidly
Stage 3
Stage 3: Late expanding
Birth rate now begins to decline (towards 20 per 1,000); population still rising but more slowly
Stage 4
Stage 4: Low stationary
Birth and death rates both low (about 10 per 1,000); population large but broadly stable
Stage 5
Stage 5: Declining
Birth rate slips below death rate; population gradually begins to shrink
