The diagram below shows the process by which seawater is turned into drinking water at a desalination plant. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Seawater is drawn from the ocean through an intake pipe

Pre-filtration
A screen removes sand, seaweed and other large particles
Stage 3
Chemical dosing
Chemicals are added to bind smaller impurities together

Reverse osmosis
Water is forced at high pressure through fine membranes that separate the salt
Stage 5
Brine disposal
The salty waste (brine) is pumped back out to sea
Stage 6
Remineralisation & disinfection
Minerals are added and the water is disinfected to make it safe
Stage 7
Storage & distribution
Potable water is stored in tanks, then piped to households
