The two maps below show the same area of a river floodplain at Willow Bend at two different stages of its annual flood cycle. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Dry season (late summer)
- A shrunken river winding slowly through the bend
- Wide gravel banks exposed along both sides of the channel
- A crescent-shaped oxbow lake to the north, dried out
- A small sandbank forming an island in mid-channel
- Firm grazing meadows across the valley floor
Flood season (following spring)
- The swollen river flowing straight across the neck of the bend
- Gravel banks fully submerged beneath the water
- The oxbow lake refilled and reconnected to the main channel
- The sandbank island vanished under water
- Grazing meadows covered by a shallow lagoon
- A fresh layer of silt deposited across the valley floor
