The two maps below show the coastal settlement of Harberton in 1985 and in the present day, following a period of significant population growth.
Harberton in 1985 (population 800)
- Small fishing village of about 40 cottages around the harbour
- Working harbour with a fish market on the quayside
- A church beside the harbour
- Farms and open fields surrounding the village
- A single lane linking the village to the north
- Open coastline with no other buildings
Harberton today (population 9,500)
- Three large housing estates built on the former farmland to the west
- Harbour converted into a marina for pleasure boats
- Fish market redeveloped into a shopping centre
- New primary school and railway station added
- Single lane widened into a ring road encircling the town
- Car park built on former fields
