Coral reefs support an astonishing variety of marine life, yet they occupy only a tiny fraction of the ocean floor. When ocean temperatures rise even slightly, the reefs lose the colourful algae that sustain them, turning pale and fragile. Protecting these ecosystems requires cooperation among scientists, governments, and local communities who depend on healthy coastal waters.
