Volcanic eruptions can affect the weather across the whole planet. When a large eruption blasts ash and gases high into the upper atmosphere, tiny droplets of sulphur form a thin haze that spreads around the globe. This haze reflects part of the incoming sunlight back into space, so less warmth reaches the surface and average temperatures can drop for a year or two before the particles eventually settle.
