After decades of decline, trams are making a comeback in cities that once tore up their tracks in favour of buses and private cars. Modern light rail systems offer smoother rides, higher passenger capacity, and lower emissions than diesel buses, while running on dedicated corridors that avoid much of the congestion affecting road traffic. Proponents argue that a fixed rail line signals long-term commitment to a route, encouraging property developers to invest nearby, unlike bus routes which can be altered or cancelled with little notice. Construction costs, however, are far higher than for bus lanes, since tracks, overhead wiring, and often utility relocation are required before a single tram can run. Some cities have offset this expense by reusing old rail corridors or coordinating construction with other infrastructure upgrades, spreading costs across multiple projects simultaneously.
