The modern passport, now a routine requirement for international travel, has a surprisingly inconsistent history. Ancient societies issued letters of safe conduct to travelers, but these documents varied enormously in format and were rarely standardized across regions. During the First World War, many governments introduced stricter passport controls to track movement and screen for spies, a practice that persisted even after the conflict ended. Before this period, travelers in parts of Europe could cross borders with minimal documentation, and passports were sometimes seen as an unnecessary bureaucratic burden. The League of Nations later attempted to standardize passport formats internationally, establishing conventions that influenced the booklet design still recognizable today. This standardization effort, however, was gradual and incomplete for decades afterward.
