Coastal and river ferry operators worldwide are beginning to replace diesel engines with battery-electric propulsion systems, driven by both emissions regulations and the relatively predictable, repetitive routes that ferries typically follow, which make charging infrastructure planning simpler than for long-haul shipping. Norway has been an early leader, operating numerous electric ferries along fjord routes where crossing distances are short enough for batteries to complete a route and recharge during loading and unloading at the dock. Electrification also substantially reduces underwater noise, benefiting marine life sensitive to engine vibration. Nonetheless, converting existing diesel ferries is often more expensive than building new electric vessels from scratch, and battery weight remains a persistent design constraint, particularly for ferries that must also carry heavy vehicle loads.
