Coaches often divide swimming training into distinct energy-system zones rather than simply counting laps. Aerobic sets, swum at a comfortable pace, build the cardiovascular base and are typically the largest share of weekly volume. Threshold sets push swimmers to a pace they can barely sustain, improving lactate clearance. Sprint sets, by contrast, are short and maximal, targeting explosive power rather than endurance, and are followed by generous rest so full recovery occurs before the next repetition. Many age-group programmes also include dedicated technique sessions using paddles, fins, or a snorkel, where speed is deliberately reduced so swimmers can focus on stroke mechanics. Without this variety, a swimmer may become fit but technically inefficient, wasting energy through poor body position.
