Long-span bridges rely on one of a handful of structural forms, each suited to a different scale of crossing. Beam bridges, the simplest, work well over short distances but sag under their own weight if stretched too far. Arch bridges channel load outward and downward through compression, allowing them to span wider gaps without internal supports. Suspension bridges hang the deck from cables strung between towers, letting them cross the longest distances of any type, including deep straits and harbours. Cable-stayed bridges, which connect the deck directly to towers with diagonal cables, need less cable material than suspension designs and are cheaper to build for medium spans. Engineers rarely choose a form on aesthetics alone; soil conditions, wind loading, and shipping clearance usually decide it.
