Houseplants often fail not from neglect but from care applied at the wrong time or in the wrong amount. Overwatering is a more common cause of death than underwatering, since waterlogged soil starves roots of oxygen and encourages fungal rot, whereas a wilting plant from dry soil usually recovers quickly once watered. Most common houseplants also slow their growth markedly in winter as daylight hours shorten, meaning they need noticeably less water and no fertiliser during that period. Placement matters too: a plant labelled as needing bright, indirect light will often scorch if placed in direct midday sun, yet may grow leggy and pale if kept too far from any window. Repotting is best done in spring, when the plant is entering active growth and can recover quickly from root disturbance.
