The umbrella's history stretches back thousands of years, originally serving as a shield against sun rather than rain in ancient Egypt, China, and Mesopotamia, where it also symbolized status and was often reserved for nobility. The adaptation for rain protection developed later, particularly in East Asia, where waxed paper and bamboo designs proved effective against downpours. European adoption lagged for centuries, partly because carrying one was considered effeminate or eccentric for men until persistent advocates gradually shifted public perception during the eighteenth century. The invention of the steel-ribbed frame in the nineteenth century made umbrellas lighter, more durable, and more affordable, enabling mass production. Today's umbrellas, largely unchanged in basic mechanism, remain among the most widely used yet frequently discarded everyday objects, given how easily wind damages cheaply made models.

According to the passage, what is true of the umbrella's history? (select all that apply)
