Bus rapid transit, or BRT, systems aim to deliver train-like speed and reliability using buses rather than rail infrastructure, at a fraction of the construction cost. The core features distinguishing genuine BRT from ordinary bus routes include dedicated lanes physically separated from mixed traffic, off-board fare collection so passengers board through multiple doors at once, and signal priority at intersections that shortens red lights for approaching buses. Cities that implement only some of these features, such as painted but unprotected lanes, often see buses trapped behind cars during peak hours, undermining the promised reliability. Where full BRT corridors have been built, however, several cities report travel times competitive with light rail, achieved in a fraction of the construction time. Critics note that BRT carries a bus's image problem, making political support harder to sustain than for rail projects.
