  1. City planners now treat wetlands as essential infrastructure, valuing them as highly as any pipe or drain in a modern flood-control system.
  2. Within a few years of restoration, the returning marshland began filtering pollutants from runoff while also sheltering birds and fish that had disappeared from the area.
  3. Recognizing the mistake, several municipalities started restoring wetlands at the edges of rivers and floodplains, replanting reeds and native grasses that had been cleared away.
  4. Decades later, those same cities began flooding more often, and researchers traced the worsening damage back to the loss of wetlands that had once absorbed excess rainwater.
  5. As cities expanded outward in the twentieth century, engineers routinely drained marshes and wetlands, viewing them as wasted land better used for roads and housing.
