Coral reef tourism generates substantial revenue for coastal economies, yet the very activity that funds reef conservation can also accelerate reef degradation through anchor damage, sunscreen chemicals, and diver contact with fragile coral structures. Some destinations have responded by capping daily visitor numbers and mandating reef-safe sunscreen, measures that reduce immediate harm but do little to address the larger threat of ocean warming, which causes coral bleaching regardless of local visitor management. Conservationists therefore increasingly argue that visitor caps should be understood as a necessary but insufficient measure, one component within a broader strategy that must also address global emissions if reefs are to survive long term.
