Renewing a health card can be done online, by mail, or in person, depending on how much time remains before the card expires. If the card will expire in more than six months, residents can renew through the online portal using their existing card number and a recent photo uploaded from a smartphone. If less than six months remain, or if the card is already expired, an in-person visit to a service centre is required so that a new photo and signature can be taken on-site. Applicants must bring two pieces of identification, one of which must show their current address. Renewal by mail is available only for residents over seventy-five, who are exempt from the photo requirement. Processing usually takes two to three weeks, and a temporary paper confirmation is issued at the time of application so the holder can access health services while waiting.
