The researchers caution, however, that the shrimp-based method appears to work well only in sediments with moderate organic content; in a smaller trial conducted in a heavily silted sub-bay nearby, shrimp reintroduction had little measurable effect on shoot survival, suggesting the technique is not universally applicable across degraded coastal sites. The team is now collaborating with restoration practitioners in two other regions to test whether the method transfers to different sediment types and shrimp species, and they emphasize that any wider rollout should be preceded by site-specific sediment testing rather than assumed to work uniformly.
