Last month I borrowed an extension ladder from my neighbour, Dave, to clean out my eavestroughs before the fall rains started. I told him I'd have it back within a week, but between work and a busy schedule, three weeks went by and the ladder was still leaning against my garage wall. Dave finally texted to ask if he could have it back, since he needed it himself to check his roof for storm damage. I felt terrible and drove it over that same evening, along with a six-pack as a thank-you for his patience. He mentioned he wasn't upset, just needed it back sooner next time, and joked that I should buy my own ladder if I keep borrowing his. It got me thinking about how easy it is to forget items you borrow once they're out of sight. Now I've started keeping a small notebook by the front door listing anything I've lent out or borrowed, with the date and expected return. It sounds old-fashioned, but it's already saved me from a similar mix-up with a borrowed drill. Small habit, but it keeps neighbourly favours from turning into awkward reminders.
