The new system uses just two bins: one for all recyclables mixed together, including paper, plastic, and glass, and one for everything else, including food scraps. Sorting will now happen off-site at the recycling facility using automated machinery, which building management says is more accurate than relying on employees to sort correctly. Each floor will have color-coded bins placed near the elevators and kitchen areas, with clear signage showing what belongs in each. Building management expects the change to actually increase the amount of material that gets properly recycled, since employees are far more likely to use a simple system correctly than a complicated one. A trial run in the north tower over the past two months already showed a 30 percent increase in recycling volume.
