Maple Auto Service has changed how it sends maintenance reminders to customers. In the past, reminder postcards were mailed out based on the number of months since a vehicle's last visit, regardless of how far it had actually been driven. Staff noticed this meant some customers were reminded too early, while others who drove long distances went too long between services. Under the new system, reminders are triggered by a combination of estimated mileage and time elapsed, using an average that customers can adjust in their profile if their driving habits differ. Reminders now arrive by text message and email, not just mail, and include a short explanation of which service is due, such as an oil change, tire rotation, or brake inspection. Customers can also request a reminder be delayed by a few weeks if they plan to bring the car in during a specific week, such as during a school break or before a road trip. The service centre says the goal is fewer missed appointments and fewer unnecessary early visits, which should also reduce phone calls from customers asking why they received a notice when their car was serviced only a few weeks earlier.
