A dispute over office temperature has prompted facilities management at Bramwell Tower to change how the thermostat is controlled. For months, employees on the fourth floor submitted conflicting complaints, with some saying the office was uncomfortably cold and others saying it was too warm, leading to informal thermostat adjustments throughout the day by whoever walked past it. Facilities staff say this back-and-forth actually made temperatures less stable and increased energy use, since the heating and cooling systems kept restarting to meet changing settings. Starting next week, the thermostat will be locked at a fixed range between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius, based on a survey of employee preferences and a review of common workplace comfort guidelines. Employees who are still uncomfortable will be able to request a desk fan or a small space heater through facilities, subject to safety approval, rather than adjusting the shared thermostat. A short trial period of one month is planned, after which employees will be surveyed again to see whether complaints have decreased. Facilities management says the goal is a stable, predictable temperature that works reasonably well for most people, even if it does not perfectly satisfy everyone on the floor.
