The city has announced that curbside compost pickup will expand to three additional neighborhoods starting next month, following a two-year pilot program in the downtown core. Residents in the newly added areas will receive a small kitchen bin and a larger outdoor cart delivered to their address during the first week of the rollout, along with a printed guide explaining what can and cannot be composted. Food scraps, coffee grounds, and yard waste are accepted, but the city stresses that compostable plastics and packaging, despite their labeling, are not accepted because they do not break down properly in the municipal composting facility. Pickup will occur every other week, alternating with regular garbage collection, rather than following the same weekly schedule as recycling. Households that contaminate their compost bin repeatedly with non-compostable material may receive a warning tag, and continued contamination could result in suspended pickup until the household attends a short online orientation session. The city says the program has already reduced landfill waste from the downtown pilot area by close to a third, and officials hope the wider rollout will produce similar results across the newly included neighborhoods.
