Windshield Repair: What Drivers Should Know. A small chip or crack in your windshield might seem minor, but it can spread quickly, especially in cold weather or after hitting a pothole, turning a cheap fix into a full replacement. Most auto glass shops recommend repairing chips smaller than a quarter as soon as possible, since resin injection can often be done in under an hour and costs far less than replacing the entire windshield. Cracks longer than the length of a dollar bill, or damage directly in the driver's line of sight, usually cannot be repaired and require full replacement instead, partly because repaired glass in that area can distort vision. Many insurance policies cover chip repair with no deductible at all, since insurers would rather pay a small amount now than a large claim later if the windshield eventually needs replacing. Drivers should avoid using their car wash's automatic brush on a chipped windshield, and should avoid extreme temperature changes, like blasting hot defrost on a frozen windshield, until the repair is done. Booking a mobile technician who comes to your home or workplace is often just as fast as visiting a shop.
