The city has updated its residential street parking permit program to make renewals easier for homeowners and long-term tenants. Previously, residents had to renew their permits in person at city hall every year, often waiting in long lines during the busy spring renewal period. Under the new system, permits can now be renewed online, by mail, or in person, and the renewal window has been extended from two weeks to six weeks. Residents will also receive a reminder notice by email or mail about a month before their permit expires, rather than being expected to track the date themselves. The cost of an annual permit remains unchanged at forty-five dollars, though a small processing fee applies to phone renewals. Visitor permits, used for guests staying longer than the usual two-hour limit, can now also be requested online instead of requiring a trip to city hall. The city says the changes are meant to reduce congestion at the permit office and cut down on residents accidentally letting their permits lapse and receiving parking tickets. Residents who prefer the old in-person process can still visit city hall during regular business hours to complete their renewal.
