With renewal season approaching, many tenants are shopping around for tenant insurance and finding that quotes vary more than expected between providers. A local consumer advocacy group recently compared quotes from five insurers for a typical one-bedroom apartment and found premiums ranging from just under two hundred dollars a year to more than three hundred and fifty, even though the coverage amounts were similar. The group noted that the biggest price differences came from optional add-ons, such as coverage for expensive jewellery, water damage from a neighbouring unit, or temporary living costs if the apartment becomes uninhabitable after a fire or flood. Renters were advised to compare the deductible amount as well as the premium, since a lower monthly cost sometimes comes with a much higher deductible that could be costly in the event of a claim. Bundling tenant insurance with an existing auto policy through the same provider often produced a discount of ten to fifteen percent. The group recommended that renters request at least three quotes and read the fine print on what belongings and situations are actually covered before choosing a policy, rather than picking based on price alone.
