In many towns, the only remaining source of local coverage is a small news website run by a handful of reporters, or in some cases, no dedicated local outlet at all. Municipalities without regular local news coverage tend to see lower voter turnout in local elections, less competitive races for city council and school board seats, and higher borrowing costs on municipal bonds, which some economists attribute to reduced scrutiny of local financial management. Without journalists attending city council meetings or filing public records requests, misconduct and inefficiency are less likely to be exposed before they become entrenched. Some communities have experimented with remedies, including nonprofit newsrooms funded by local philanthropy, reader-supported membership models, and public funding schemes modeled on public broadcasting. Early results are mixed: nonprofit outlets have successfully revived accountability coverage in a number of cities, but they often struggle to match the scale and consistency of the newsrooms they replaced, and their survival frequently depends on a small number of major donors rather than a broad and stable revenue base. Media researchers therefore argue that while alternative funding models can partially fill the gap left by collapsing advertising revenue, no single replacement has yet proven durable enough to fully restore the civic function that local newspapers once performed.
