PTE Core Answer Short Question: method, scoring and practice

You hear a general-knowledge question and answer with one word or a short phrase. It is a precision task, not an invitation to explain: recognize the question type, retrieve the exact concept and say only what is needed.

How Answer Short Question is scored

Answer Short Question contributes to Listening and Speaking. Pearson scores whether the answer is appropriate and understandable; extra explanation does not create extra credit and can introduce a contradiction after an initially correct word.

Use this correctly: practise the task rule and review the exact error pattern. A task-level practice result is not a conversion to Pearson’s 10–90 score and is not a promise of your test result.

A three-step method that survives test pressure

  1. Step 1. Classify the prompt immediately: person, place, object, time, measurement or action.
  2. Step 2. Answer in the shortest grammatical form that fully identifies the concept.
  3. Step 3. If unsure, give the strongest single answer once; do not cycle through several guesses.

Three common traps

  • Repeating the entire question before answering.
  • Giving two alternatives joined by “or,” making the response ambiguous.
  • Overthinking familiar everyday knowledge because the task looks too simple.

Prompt: “What device do you use to measure a person’s temperature?”

Approach: Say “a thermometer.” The article is harmless, but a long description of how it works adds risk without adding credit. Stop after the complete answer.
