PTE Core Describe Image: method, scoring and practice

A visual such as a chart or graph appears and you describe its main information aloud. You do not need to inventory every label: a useful response identifies the visual, selects the most important features and connects them in a clear spoken overview.

How Describe Image is scored

Describe Image contributes to Speaking. The response is judged through spoken content and delivery traits, so relevant comparisons, intelligible pronunciation and sustained fluency matter; listing disconnected numbers can sound busy while communicating very little.

Use this correctly: practise the task rule and review the exact error pattern. A task-level practice result is not a conversion to Pearson’s 10–90 score and is not a promise of your test result.

A three-step method that survives test pressure

  1. Step 1. Use preparation time to identify the title, unit, highest and lowest values, and one overall trend or contrast.
  2. Step 2. Open by naming what the visual shows, then report two or three features with comparisons instead of reading every value.
  3. Step 3. Finish with a one-sentence overview and stop cleanly rather than filling the final seconds with repetition.

Three common traps

  • Reading axis labels without explaining the relationship between them.
  • Trying to mention every number and running out of structure.
  • Using a memorized script that does not match the visual.

Prompt: A bar chart shows monthly transit trips: bus 48,000, rail 31,000 and bicycle share 12,000.

Approach: State that the chart compares three travel modes, identify bus as clearly highest and cycling as lowest, compare bus with rail, then summarize that motorized public transport dominates.
