PTE Core Write from Dictation: method, scoring and practice

You hear a short sentence once and type it from memory. The task rewards exact word recovery and spelling, so a repeatable listen-chunk-type-check routine is more dependable than trying to hold the entire sound string untouched.

How Write from Dictation is scored

Write from Dictation is integrated and contributes to Listening and Writing. Content is scored by correct words in the response, making every recovered word useful; spelling and word sequence remain essential to an accurate sentence.

Use this correctly: practise the task rule and review the exact error pattern. A task-level practice result is not a conversion to Pearson’s 10–90 score and is not a promise of your test result.

A three-step method that survives test pressure

  1. Step 1. Listen for meaning chunks and silently repeat the first chunk while the rest of the sentence arrives.
  2. Step 2. Type the remembered content promptly, preserving grammar words and plural or tense endings.
  3. Step 3. Use the remaining seconds to check sentence grammar, spelling and any likely missing small word.

Three common traps

  • Remembering only nouns while dropping articles, auxiliaries and prepositions.
  • Changing the speaker’s wording to a synonym that preserves meaning but not the dictated word.
  • Leaving obvious spelling or agreement errors because the sentence “sounds close enough.”
